Why maintenance matters

Traditional Skills Directory

The Directory of Traditional Building Skills is in its fourth edition and draws together a wide selection of those working in the fields of historic building conservation, ranging from architects to quantity surveyors to specialist sub-contractors.

It gives useful background explanations on the philosophy behind the conservation of historic buildings and provides a general framework as to how you should approach a restoration project. The merits of a planned maintenance system as opposed to the more costly option of wholesale repair and replacement when an element is beyond saving are also explained.

A hard copy of the directory is available free of charge from the UAHS office. By post, £2 is payable to cover postage, packaging and administration. A PDF version can be downloaded via the link below.

The Directory of Traditional Building Skills is not the only source of relevant information in the UK and Ireland. The Irish Georgian Society maintains a Building Skills Register containing details of firms both north and south, while Cathedral Communications, based in England, regulaly updates The Building Conservation Directory
